AI-generated answers now sit between your brand and your buyers. When someone asks ChatGPT which project management tool fits their team, or opens Perplexity to compare CRMs, your website might never get a click, but your brand can still get named, recommended, or completely left out.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is essential if you want to be part of the conversation.

The hard part isn’t understanding that GEO matters. It’s knowing where to start. Should you fix your robots.txt first? Rewrite your content? Chase brand mentions on Reddit?

We created this GEO checklist to help you get it right and organized by priority so you can start with what matters most and work your way through to the longer-term tasks that compound over time.

    What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

    GEO is the practice of structuring your website, content, and brand presence so AI systems, including ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Claude, find, understand, and cite you when they generate answers. GEO is often used interchangeably with AI Search, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or just AI search.

    GEO vs SEO: Key Differences

    Search Engine Optimization (SEO) aims to improve your position in traditional search engine results pages (SERPs) for relevant searches.

    GEO, on the other hand, aims to get you cited as a source within the answer an AI system generates for a relevant query.

    While GEO and SEO serve distinct purposes, they’re really just complementary practices to help you get your content in front of the people looking for what you offer.

    GEO Builds on SEO, Adding a New Layer Specifically for AI Search Platforms

    GEO doesn’t work well in isolation because AI systems rely heavily on traditional search infrastructure to do their job.

    Perplexity leans on Google’s index, and ChatGPT Search runs on Bing. If your site isn’t crawlable, indexed, and ranking reasonably well already, you’re missing the foundation GEO builds on.

    Most of what you’ve already invested in SEO, including clean technical foundations, strong content, and real authority, carries over directly.

    GEO then adds a specific, prioritized layer on top of that foundation.

    The Growing Importance of AI Visibility

    AI search has moved from novelty to mainstream discovery channel remarkably fast. ChatGPT alone has crossed 900 million weekly active users, up from 400 million in February 2025, and AI search platform visits grew 42.8% year over year, while Google’s grew just 2.4%.

    And that growth is concentrated in exactly the queries that matter most to content-driven brands.

    Google still holds roughly 80% of overall search, but AI platforms are now capturing 15 to 20% of informational query volume specifically: the research, comparison, and how-to searches that used to send steady traffic to brand and publisher sites.

    Transactional and navigational searches, like tracking an order or looking up a brand name, remain far traditional SERP-centric, at least for now.

    Google’s AI Overviews now show up on roughly 16% of all US searches, more than double the rate from March 2025, and 97% of those queries are informational.

    The downside is the rise of no-click searches. SparkToro found that roughly 7 in 10 Google searches now end without a click at all, a trend AI has clearly accelerated.

    When an Overview appears, the top-ranking organic result sees up to a 34.5% drop in click-through rate. You can hold #1 and still watch traffic shrink, because the AI answer already satisfied the searcher.

    Clicks aside, AI visibility carries real commercial value. A citation inside an AI answer functions less like a search result and more like a recommendation, shaping a prospect’s shortlist.

    AI-referred traffic converts at roughly 14.2%, compared to about 2.8% for traditional organic traffic, because someone reaching you through a synthesized answer has typically already done more research.

    That’s exactly why GEO is an investment to make now, not later – it means you’re visible at the exact moment AI increasingly makes the first recommendation.

    GEO Checklist Part 1: Technical Foundations

    First things first, you need AI systems to be able to access and read your content. Everything else, including your content, your schema, and your brand signals, is wasted effort if they can’t.

    Technical fixes also tend to be the fastest wins available to you, so this is where you’ll see the quickest movement.

    AI Crawler Access & robots.txt

    Check your robots.txt file to confirm that GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended aren’t blocked.

    Note that these are not interchangeable. GPTBot crawls for OpenAI’s model training, while OAI-SearchBot is the separate crawler that powers ChatGPT’s live search results.

    Blocking one doesn’t block the other, so if you want to appear in ChatGPT’s real-time answers, you need OAI-SearchBot allowed even if you’d rather keep GPTBot out for training-data reasons.

    You also need to check your server logs, or CDN rules too. A surprising number of sites block AI bots unintentionally through a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule that has nothing to do with robots.txt.

    JavaScript Rendering & Server-Side Content

    Most AI crawlers don’t execute JavaScript. They fetch raw HTML and stop there.

    Onely’s research into how Google’s AI systems build responses found that the vast majority of the text fragments AI Overviews cite came directly from the HTML body, not from anything rendered client-side.

    If your key content only appears after a script runs, it may functionally be invisible to the systems you’re trying to reach.

    To test this yourself, view your page’s raw source (not the rendered DOM) on your top few pages, and check whether the important headings and body copy show up.

    Viewing “raw source” versus the “rendered DOM” are genuinely different views of a page, and the gap between them is exactly what determines whether AI crawlers see your content.

    If turning off JavaScript makes your page go blank, AI crawlers likely see it as blank too.

    Schema Markup & Structured Data

    Schema tells AI systems what your content means, not just what it says. Prioritize Organization schema on your homepage, Article schema with author attribution, and FAQPage schema anywhere you’ve got real Q&A content.

    Having schema isn’t the same as having it right, though. A 2026 audit of 5,000 websites found that 71% of sites had deployed at least one schema type, but only 22% passed validation cleanly.

    That means the majority had errors like missing required fields or mismatches between the schema and the visible page content, so always run your markup through Google’s Rich Results Test.

    Site Speed, Core Web Vitals & Sitemaps

    AI crawlers operate under real latency constraints, and a slow page can get abandoned before it’s fully read.

    Keep your Core Web Vitals in the “good” range, especially on mobile, and make sure your XML sitemap is current and submitted to both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

    Bing matters more here than it used to, since ChatGPT Search draws heavily from Bing’s index.

    Should You Bother With llms.txt?

    Adding llms.txt, a proposed standard for giving AI crawlers a markdown “table of contents” for your site, is widely recommended, but it hasn’t been formally recognized or adopted yet.

    An Otterly AI experiment tracking crawler behavior over 90 days found that llms.txt files received only about 0.1% of AI crawler requests compared to regular content pages.

    So, it’s a reasonable forward-looking bet but don’t prioritize it over nailing established crawlability fundamentals like robots.txt, rendering, and schema.

    GEO Checklist Part 2: Content Optimization

    Once AI systems can actually reach your pages, the next question is whether they think the content is worth citing.

    These are the content-level changes with the clearest evidence behind them:

    Structure Content for AI Extraction

    AI systems don’t read a page top to bottom the way a human does. They pull out individual passages and use them on their own, separate from the rest of your page. That means each section needs to make complete sense by itself, without relying on context from paragraphs above it.

    Lead with a direct, declarative answer in the first two or three sentences of a section, then support it with detail.

    This isn’t a minor formatting preference. CXL’s analysis found that 55% of AI Overview citations pull from the first 30% of a page’s content, so if your actual answer is buried in paragraph eight, you’re competing with pages that put it in paragraph one.

    Keep paragraphs short (60 to 100 words works well for extraction) and use headings that mirror the real questions people would type into ChatGPT or Perplexity.

    Add Data, Statistics & Citations

    Backing up your claims with real numbers, quotes, and sources makes AI systems more likely to cite you.

    A 2024 study by Princeton, Georgia Tech, IIT Delhi, and the Allen Institute for AI, which tested different content tactics, found that adding statistics and citations improved visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 30 to 40%.

    AI systems build their answers by looking for content that reads like a trustworthy, well-supported source, which is exactly why being specific, adding real numbers to back up what you’re saying, and citing your sources is so important.

    Build Visible FAQ Sections + FAQ Schema

    Write FAQs first, mark them up second. Never the reverse. AI systems quote what’s visible on the page; schema only helps them understand the structure of what’s already there.

    Base your questions on what your sales team actually hears, not solely on keyword-tool suggestions, and keep answers short enough to stand alone if lifted out of context.

    Content Freshness & Update Cadence

    AI systems consistently favor recently updated content over static “evergreen” pages. Set a real cadence, such as quarterly reviews for high-value pages and immediate updates whenever a fact, price, or statistic changes, rather than waiting for a page to visibly feel stale.

    The “Information Gain” Test

    AI systems are built to synthesize, and synthesis favors sources that add something the others don’t already have.

    Before you publish, check whether or not the page includes at least one thing that isn’t in the top three AI-generated answers for that topic, such as a proprietary stat, a genuine “we tested this” result, a contrarian take. 

    GEO Checklist Part 3: Brand & Entity Authority

    Technical fixes and better content get you cited when AI systems land on your pages. The next step is making sure AI systems trust what they find about you, not just from you.

    Entity Consistency Across Platforms

    AI systems build a working “profile” of your brand from every source that mentions you, including your website, LinkedIn, and Google Business Profile, as well as external sources like Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, and independent publishers.

    When those sources disagree on your founding date, team size, or product description, that inconsistency lowers the AI’s confidence in citing you at all, since it can’t resolve which version is accurate.

    Audit these sources against each other directly. Search your own brand name and check whether a Google Knowledge Panel appears; if it does, verify the details match what’s on your site.

    If you’re eligible for a Wikipedia page and don’t have one, that’s worth prioritizing, as Wikipedia disproportionately shapes what AI models know about a brand.

    Earning Brand Mentions (Linked & Unlinked)

    Brand mentions, whether linked or not, are strongly tied to how often AI systems cite you.

    Ahrefs’ analysis of 75,000 brands found that branded web mentions correlate more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks, domain authority, or any other traditional SEO signal, and unlinked mentions count just as much as linked ones.

    Of course, bigger, more established brands naturally rack up more mentions and more citations, so it’s not proof that mentions alone drive citations, but it is definitely a solid reason to prioritize PR and earning brand mentions.

    When it comes to specific channels, mentions on Reddit and YouTube are especially important.

    Reddit appears in 77% of product review searches and shows up disproportionately across AI answers, while YouTube alone accounts for roughly 29.5% of citations in Google’s AI Overviews, making it one of the single most-cited domains in AI search.

    E-E-A-T Signals & Author Credentials

    E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) isn’t a Google-only concept anymore. AI systems look for the same signals when deciding whether content is worth citing.

    Add real author bios with verifiable credentials, link to their external profiles, and attach clear “reviewed by” attribution on anything technical, financial, or medical. A byline with no substance behind it does about as much good as no byline at all.

    GEO Checklist Part 4: Platform-Specific Considerations

    Most GEO advice treats “AI search” as one target, but it isn’t.

    Each platform, whether that’s ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews, retrieves, ranks, and cites content through a genuinely different mechanism, so optimizing for one doesn’t automatically carry over to the others.

    Research from The Digital Bloom’s 2025 AI Visibility Report found that only 11% of domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, so it’s important to consider platform-specific tactics.

    Retrieval mechanics often change without much notice, but here is a snapshot of how each platform currently operates:

    ChatGPT

    ChatGPT Search runs on Bing’s index, not Google’s. Analysis cited in The Digital Bloom’s 2025 AI Visibility Report found that 87% of ChatGPT Search citations match Bing’s top 10 organic results.

    That means if you’ve only ever optimized for Google, you could be virtually invisible to Bing, so verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap there specifically.

    ChatGPT also tends to mention brands far more often than it links to them, functioning more like a brand-awareness channel than a traffic source, so don’t judge your ChatGPT performance by referral clicks alone and track how often you’re named, even unlinked.

    Perplexity

    Perplexity works differently. Every query triggers a live web search, and it draws heavily on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), actively searching Google and other engines in real time rather than relying only on pre-trained knowledge.

    That makes freshness matter more here than on any other platform, and it explains why Perplexity cites sources so explicitly, with numbered references similar to a research paper.

    Content with clear statistics and explicit sourcing tends to perform well, since Perplexity is the most citation-heavy of the major AI answer engines by design.

    Google AI Overviews

    AI Overviews sit directly inside Google’s own results and pull from Google’s existing index.

    That’s why Google’s own guidance frames this as an extension of SEO fundamentals rather than a separate discipline. Strong traditional Google rankings remain the clearest lever you have here.

    YouTube deserves specific attention for AI Overviews, given how disproportionately it gets cited in responses compared to other content types.

    Measuring GEO Success: KPIs & Tools

    Rankings and organic traffic measure a different game. GEO needs its own scoreboard, built around five core metrics:

    • Citation rate: how often your pages get linked as a source in AI-generated answers
    • AI share of voice: your citation frequency relative to competitors, for the same queries
    • Brand mention rate: how often you’re named at all, linked or not, since ChatGPT in particular favors mentions over links
    • Sentiment: whether AI descriptions of your brand skew positive, neutral, or negative
    • Accuracy: whether the facts AI systems state about you are actually correct

    That last one matters more than it sounds. Periodically asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity “What is [your brand]? is a cheap, direct way to catch AI systems getting your facts wrong before a prospect does.

    Expect volatility, not a clean trend line. AI citation tracking is noisier than SEO rank tracking, since the same prompt can return different sources from one day to the next. A single week’s dip or spike isn’t meaningful on its own; look for a sustained trend across several weeks before drawing conclusions.

    None of this works as a checklist you complete once and forget. AI platforms change how they retrieve and cite content often enough that a GEO audit from six months ago is already partly stale. Treat this as a recurring cycle, not a one-time project.

    If you take away one thing, make it the sequencing: fix technical access first, because nothing else matters until AI crawlers can actually reach and render your content.

    Then restructure content for extraction and add the data points that make it citable. Brand authority work (mentions, entity consistency, E-E-A-T) compounds slowly but pays off longest, so start it early even though results lag behind the technical fixes.

    And don’t assume “done transfers across platforms. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews each retrieve and cite content through genuinely different mechanisms. Work through this checklist with that in mind, and revisit your baseline every quarter to see what’s actually moving.

Content and brand-authority work, the kind that builds real citation likelihood, takes longer, often several months, because it depends on AI systems recrawling, re-evaluating, and rebuilding trust in your entity over time. There isn't a well-established industry benchmark for exactly how long that takes (this is genuinely the one place in this guide where I don't have a solid source to point you to), so treat the 30/60/90-day sequence above as your implementation timeline, not a guaranteed results timeline.

    Do I need different tactics for different AI platforms?

    Yes, meaningfully so. ChatGPT Search citations track Bing's rankings closely, so Bing Webmaster Tools work that most teams skip becomes essential. Perplexity rewards freshness and explicit sourcing because it runs a live search on every query. Google AI Overviews pull from Google's own index and lean heavily on YouTube citations. Optimizing for only one platform is why just 11% of brands manage to get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. The platform-specific checklist earlier in this guide is worth revisiting before you assume “done” applies everywhere.
